Over The Hill Cycling Club Notes 16th June 2019

This weekend sees the inaugural Ironman Cork Triathlon on Sunday 23rd June .  The event kicks off with a 3.8km sea swim from the sandy Claycastle beach in Youghal. This is followed by a 180km ( 2 * 90km loops) bike course along the undulating coastal roads and fishing villages of east Cork, before heading inland through Midleton and Dungourney.  Once the athletes have completed the cycle, they will tackle a 42.2km run through Youghal town. The club will be out in force supporting members Marie Mac Aree who will be racing with number 709 pinned on, and Kevin Fennessy  who will carry number 473. Marie and Kevin have been posting very quick times recently in warm up events and training. The club wish both Kevin and Marie the very best of luck on the day, and hope both athletes thoroughly enjoy their day.

Last Saturday saw big numbers on the road. Members were getting their last big spin in before the club cycle of the Ring Of Kerry on 22nd June. The cycle started with a bang for Brian Atkinson when his wheel exploded in Glanmire. Brian who was thankfully uninjured, was very disappointed to loose his trusty wheel, as they had completed over 250,000kms together. It was fortunate that the club broom wagon, piloted by the redoubtable Tom'O'Sullivan was on hand to collect Brian and the damaged bicycle.

There was two groups left the village on Sunday morning and headed for Rathcormac, before turning at Dr. Barry's Bridge for Lisgoold, and on to Midleton. From Midleton, it was on to Cobh Cross was, where both groups stopped for coffee. Re-fueled, the cyclists headed back to Carrigtwohill, on to Leamlara, and Kearney’s Cross. The final leg back to the village was wind assisted, completing a very enjoyable 42km.

Club cycles continue each Saturday and Sunday. The club is always delighted to welcome new members. On Sunday mornings at 9am, all levels of cyclists are catered for, with the group split into 3 levels. New members are very welcome to turn up and cycle provided they have a racing bike, a helmet, and are over 18.
