Over The Hill Cycling Club Notes 14th October 2018

Massive congratulations to club members Marie MacAree and Niamh Fleming who successfully completed Ironman Barcelona recently. The triathlon commenced with a 3.8km swim in tough conditions.  This was followed by a 180km cycle where the girls were able to put all their hard training to good use. The cycle was followed by a 42km run. In an event where just finishing is an achievement, the girls completed the triathlon in very impressive times. Their performances demonstrated what can be achieved by hard work and perseverance.

Cycling on the karting track at Adventurepark Watergrasshill commenced last Tuesday night. This will run for the next number of weeks. The hour long cycle proved very popular with members, and allowed safe cycling under lights. The Saturday cycle was canceled. Not to be confined to the couch, good numbers headed for Lisgoold Hall where club member Nigel Carroll was helping to run the Pedal Beyond Event. The event was a series of hour long cycling sessions on stationery bikes. It was organised by the Lackenbehy Action Group who are campaigning against the expansion of a quarry in Leamlara. The event proved to be very popular with children and adults alike.

On Sunday, members headed for Kilworth to attend the cycle in aid of Pieta House. Some members cycled from Watergrasshill to Kilworth and joined the cycle there. The ladies group from the club undertook the 50km cycle from Kilworth. This was a first organised cycle for many of the ladies. The good weather ensured the event was very enjoyable. The food stop in Conna was well stocked. When word filtered back to Watergrasshill,  Alan Heffernan hopped on his bike and pedaled like a bat out of hell to the food stop. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, Alan was seen leaving Conna with his pockets full of sandwiches and buns. No making lunches for the week in the Heffernan house!

Club cycles continue on Saturday and Sundays. Details will be posted on club Facebook page. The club is always delighted to welcome new members. On Sunday mornings at 9am, all levels of cyclists are catered for, with the group split into 3 levels. New members are very welcome to turn up and cycle provided they have a racing bike, a helmet, and are over 18.
